Jacques-Henri Lartigue, inspired by the dazzling light of the South of France since his first visit in 1914, recorded every beautiful sight that came this way. His enthusiastic quotes on art and photography showed an artist unable to rest until he’d recorded all in his path. Lartigue, like many artists, including Picasso, one of his subjects, found inspiration in the beauty of women. I think we can all find inspiration in his inspiration.
Photography is something you learn to love very quickly. I know that many, many things are going to ask me to have their pictures taken and I will take them all.Jacques-Henri Lartigue
Here we see flirty, coquettish women, solitary girls at tables, women sitting on the floor, legs splayed with abandon, or revelling in the sea in ecstasy. These are real, natural people, unposed and seemingly unaware of the camera. They seem as fresh and modern today as when they were shot. The light is intense, the colours sharp and his eye is acute.

Pop along this December to see, “Jacques Henri LARTIGUE: Les Couleurs d’Opio“, at Opiom Gallery, in the town he made his home: Opio, near Cannes. If you’re not in the region, spend a few moments soaking up his passion, with these pictures.
These beauties stand the test of time.
