Gather Ye Rosebuds

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time

Gather Ye Rosebuds… This beautiful and rather mournful poem by Robert Herrick sums up the summer for us now, with the feeling of Fall just around the corner, even at the height of August. Winter clothes are appearing in magazines..Brrr. If we’re not careful, it’ll soon be time for log fires and woolly hats. It’s still summer, but the blossoms are gone and the petals are at their peak. One more turn of the sundial and they’ll be wilting!

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he’s a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he’s to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may, go marry:
For having lost but once your prime
You may for ever tarry.

Robert Herrick. 1591–1674

Coming across these evergreen stanzas  started me thinking, “How to make the most of the summer, right now?” Lying in city parks in the lunch hour and steaming close and clammy cheek by jowl with other passengers on the subway is all very well in week time, but really, a trip to the country is in order. If you’re not already on holiday soaking up the beach life somewhere – or if you’ve already been and are back manning the laptop (curses), it’s time to make a plan.

Take some time out with a friend, like I did with Benita, and weave a path through the countryside, reading poetry and sipping nectar. Or something like that.

Get your favourite snacks stocked up in a cooler, load up the car, or your daypack and head on over to a grand garden, stately home (some are open to the public) neighbour’s rose-covered bower, Central Park or somewhere in the country to while away the hours this weekend. Forget all the chores and shopping: get it delivered, iron your clothes on sunday night. This is you time.

Pick a few dresses emblazoned with blooms, redolent of the heady atmosphere of a summer’s day and get ready for your August idyll. Make sure your skin is glowing and ready for a  solar closeup with a juicy diet, very little makeup and a lot of protection.

You delicate flower, you.
