Arriving in Bangkok, whether for holiday, fashion shows or shopping, is a beautifully intense experience. The extreme heat, color and aroma overdose can be startling when you arrive from a more temperate city, but right from the airport, it’s so exciting. If you’ve had a long flight, as I did, you’ll need a lie in, or three, and a hearty breakfast to revive your jaded plane food tastebuds.
Try the buffet in your hotel or guest house, by all means, but pretty soon you’ll want to go deep into Bangkok or BKK as it’s often called. If you’re lucky/crazy enough to stay near the so-called backpacker’s area, Banglamphu (now full of boutique hotels with a smattering of alleyway guesthouses), you only need a few steamy steps to reach my favourite breakfast haunt. For the rest of us, it’s a taxi-ride through the heat haze: but it’s worth it.
Jaywalk Cafe, probably the best Bangkok breakfast in the world..DV
Jaywalk Cafe, probably the best Bangkok breakfast in the world, or at least in Banglamphu, pronounced Bang-lam-pu. Fresh, neat and unfussy, the beauty lies in the food. If you’re biushed from all that haggling in the markets, this is a great place to decompress. I loved it.
Though the lunch menu is equally delicious, the breakfast is what patrons politely fight to get a table for: this usually is a seemly battle of wills, with elegant smiles on one side and a continuous round of orders to stack up by your laptop, on the other (free wifi makes it a great place from which to run your social media empire or research hotels in the islands).
Try the fluffy scrambled egg breakfast on day one (you’ll be back), with delicious bread, coffee and jams, try the speciality coffees, (Creme Brûlée Latte!) then go for the prize. (Vegans have fun here too, the Thai menu is huge.) Mango Tango Pancakes, Strawberry Crumble Pancakes, Blueberry Cheesecake Pancakes.. The Pancakes! Beware, this is no dieter’s paradise, so, fashionistas, totally not the place to eat on your modelling tour of Asia.
Second thoughts, read the large sign that takes up one wall, “I love you like a fat kid loves chocolate”, and eat anyway.
You can always take up another profession, right?
